Sustainability
Heatherbrae has been involved in several projects that have or are soon anticipated to achieve LEED certification.
The introduction of third party environmental performance certification such as LEED has created a way to measurably increase the quality, durability, and sustainability of buildings. This has provided Heatherbrae with the opportunity to develop and implement management systems that reduce the environmental impact of all stages of the construction process. Our company is proud of its involvement in producing environmentally friendly and sustainable buildings.
Heatherbrae has long supported actions to limit climate change and put environmental protection ahead of economic progress. We are committed to working in harmony with the ecological systems that support us.
A significant portion of Canada’s annual resource expenditures is consumed by the construction industry, largely because of traditional material selection procedures and renovation and construction practices. Waste generation and disposal constitute another important environmental issue facing the construction industry. Conducting renovation and construction activities in an environmentally responsible way also requires a need for safer working conditions for trades people and building occupants; especially when working in or around occupied facilities.
In recognition of these factors, Heatherbrae voluntarily implemented a number of formal policies to reduce the negative environmental impacts of our operations. With guidance from ‘The Environmentally Responsible Construction and Renovation Handbook’ developed by Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) in partnership with Environment Canada, Heatherbrae initiated a process in 2005 to ensure that environmental factors were taken into consideration during each phase of our new construction and renovation projects.
During procurement and throughout construction, Heatherbrae will ensure the trade contractors fully understand the program and policy requirements specifically as they relate to their scope of work.
